What to Avoid After Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a common treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. It works by injecting a special solution into the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and gradually fade. The procedure is quick, and most people can return to their daily routine soon after.
Even so, the steps you take during recovery play a big role in how well your results turn out. Keep reading our blog to learn what to avoid after sclerotherapy so you can heal smoothly and reduce the chance of complications.
1. Avoid Heavy Exercise for a Short Period
Light walking is helpful after treatment because it supports good blood flow, but high-impact workouts are not the best choice right away.
Running, weightlifting, cycling, and intense cardio can increase pressure in the treated veins. This extra strain may lead to swelling or slow down the healing process. Most vein specialists advise waiting a few weeks before going back to harder workouts.
During this time, gentle movement is fine, but anything that pushes the legs too hard should be avoided.
2. Skip Hot Baths, Saunas, and Steam Rooms
Heat causes veins to widen. After sclerotherapy, your treated veins need time to stay closed so the body can absorb them.
Hot tubs, long hot baths, steam rooms, and saunas raise your body temperature and can interfere with this process. Avoid hot baths/hot tubs/saunas/steam rooms for at least 48–72 hours (or while you’re required to keep dressings/stockings on).
Warm showers are acceptable, but try to keep the water from getting too hot. This small adjustment helps maintain good healing conditions. Showering depends on your dressing/stocking instructions
3. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure on Treated Areas
Freshly treated skin can be sensitive. Sun exposure may lead to dark spots or prolonged discoloration. Keeping the legs covered or using broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect the skin during the healing phase.
Many clinicians recommend avoiding tanning beds as well, as they produce strong UV rays that can irritate treated veins.
Questions About What to Avoid After Sclerotherapy? ?
4. Do Not Travel Long Distances Right Away
Ask your provider before long flights/road trips, especially in the first week. If you must travel, wear compression stockings if instructed, walk every 30–60 minutes, and do ankle pumps/hydrate. Sitting for long periods on flights or long drives is not ideal immediately after sclerotherapy. When your legs stay still for too long, blood flow slows, which may increase the chance of swelling or clot formation.
If travel cannot be delayed, take short walking breaks, stretch your legs, and drink plenty of water.
5. Avoid Tight Clothing That Restricts Circulation
Wear your prescribed compression stockings. Avoid tight clothing with constricting bands (waist/groin/ thigh) that may be uncomfortable or restrict circulation around treated areas.
Skinny jeans, tight leggings, or garments that press firmly on the waist or thighs may interfere with healthy blood flow. Choose loose, breathable clothing until your provider says it is fine to switch back.
6. Pause the Use of Certain Skincare Products
Don’t apply lotions/creams over treated areas until the sites heal. Keep dressings/stockings dry for the period you’re instructed. Lotions, oils, or exfoliating products may irritate the injection sites. It is best to keep the treated skin clean and dry for the first day and avoid applying anything unless your provider says it is safe.
7. Avoid Standing or Sitting Still for Long Periods
Even during normal daily activities, try not to stay in one position too long. Alternating between sitting and standing supports circulation and reduces pressure on the veins. Walk several times daily; avoid long uninterrupted sitting/standing.
8. Hold Off on Shaving the Treated Area
Shaving right after sclerotherapy may irritate the skin or disrupt small scabs as they form. It is better to wait until the injection sites heal. This simple step helps prevent redness and discomfort.
9. Give Alcohol and Smoking a Break
For best healing, avoid smoking. If you bruise easily, consider limiting alcohol for 24–48 hours.
